FOR ALL PROJECTS:
Supplies:
Template plastic
Template pencil
Small, sharp scissors
Blue washout marker
Fabric (100 percent cotton)
Thread (100 percent cotton that matches the color of your appliqué design)
Pins
Fine quilting needle

TULIP PILLOW
MATERIALS
5/8 yard of 45-inch-wide off-white fabric
5/8 yard of plaid fabric
1/2 yard of blue floral fabric
1/3 yard of straw print fabric
4x4-inch piece of pink dot fabric
2 1/4 yards of 1/4-inch-diameter cotton cord
Sewing thread to match
18x18-inch pillow form

Cut and prepare the fabric appliqué shapes for the pillow front. Cut one flower center from pink dot fabric, cut one flower petal from blue floral fabric, cut one flower petal reversed from plaid fabric, and cut one leaf from straw print fabric. For the stem, cut a 1 1/2x12-inch bias strip from straw print fabric. With wrong sides together, hand press up 1/2-inch along one long edge of the strip. Fold over 1/2-inch on the opposite long edge, folding the strip into thirds; press.

Arrange the appliqué shapes centered on a 22x22-inch square of off-white fabric and hand-appliqué in place. Attach the stem and plaid petal first and then layer the blue floral petal over them as shown. Trim the completed pillow front into a 19x19-inch square, keeping the design centered.
For piping, cut enough 2-inch-wide bias strips from blue floral fabric to equal 80 inches. Sew the short ends of the strips together diagonally to make one long strip; press the seam allowances open. Center the cord on the wrong side of the strip and fold the fabric over the cord, matching the long edges. Use a zipper foot to sew through both fabric layers close to the cord.
Beginning at the center bottom on the right side of the pillow front, pin piping to the front with the raw edges facing out. Sew the piping in place with a zipper foot and a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
Cut a 19x19-inch square from plaid fabric for the pillow back. With right sides facing, sew the pillow front to the back atop the piping stitching line, leaving a 10-inch opening in the bottom edge. Trim the corners diagonally and turn the pillow cover right side out. Insert the pillow form into the cover and slip-stitch the opening closed.
