A good paint job starts before you pop the lid on the paint can—time spent on prep is worth it!

We consider the prep work to be 90 percent of any paint project—don’t skimp here. Read on to learn how to make your walls good to go.

Ready the Room
You’ll save time and headaches when painting if you clear the room first.

Try to avoid having to squeeze a ladder between furniture or paint around switchplates. Remove as many items as possible, move remaining things to the center of the room, and cover them with drop cloths.

Remove anything you don’t want painted—switchplates, outlet plates, heat registers, towel bars, curtain rods from the rods. Turn off the power to remove wall-mounted light fixtures. And remember to remove nails—they’re drips waiting to happen.

On the next page is a great way to keep track of switchplates and other necessary hardware.
