Filing Cabinet Slipcover

To hide that not-so-attractive organizer, make this custom-fit slipcover. It's designed with a front panel that rolls down to conceal the drawers.

MATERIALS
Fabric A for outside of slipcover and covered buttons
Fabric B for reverse of slipcover and tabs
Metal filing cabinet
Fleece for top underlining
Two 1-inch-diameter covered buttons

INSTRUCTIONS
Measuring the Cabinet
Determine the height (A), width (B), and depth (C) of the filing cabinet. (Height = Measurement A + 2-inch hem + 3⁄4-inch seam allowance + 1⁄4-inch ease. Width = Measurement B + 1-inch seam allowance + 1⁄4-inch ease. Depth = Measurement C + 1-inch seam allowance + 1⁄4-inch ease.)

Cutting the Fabric
From Fabric A, cut two side panels at calculated height and depth, one top panel at calculated width and depth, and one back panel at calculated height and width.

From Fabric A, cut one front panel at exact height and width, adding 1 inch to each dimension for seam allowances.

From Fabric B, cut one front panel lining to same dimensions as the front panel. Also from Fabric B, cut two 9-1⁄2-inch-wide box-pleat panels at the calculated height of the cabinet and two 4-1⁄2-inch-wide side/front facings at the exact height of the cabinet.

From fleece, cut one top at the calculated width and depth.

Assembling the Liner
Sew a 2-inch hem along one short side of each of the two side, back, and box-pleat panels. With wrong sides together, baste the fleece to the top panel around the outside edges. Zigzag-stitch the raw edge of each side/front facing.

Fold each of the box-pleat panels to make a box pleat. See the diagram, above. Press the folds.

slipcover side skirt assembly

Referring to the diagram, above, piece the panels together as shown to make the side skirt. With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, stitch the skirt to the top panel along the sides and back, positioning the box pleats at the two back corners.

With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, sew the front panel to the front panel lining along the sides and bottom edge. Trim the corners and turn right side out. Baste across the top edge of the front panel.

From Fabric B, cut two 2-3⁄4×7-1⁄2-inch strips for the tabs.Fold each strip in half lengthwise with right sides together and raw edges aligned. Sew along the long side and one short side of each strip, leaving one short side open. Turn the strips right side out through the openings and press. Center and stitch a 1-1⁄4-inch-long buttonhole 1⁄2-inch from the finished end of each strip. Baste the tabs to the lining side of the front flap, approximately 2 inches in from each side.

With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, stitch the front panel to the top panel. Clean-finish the seam to hide the raw edges.

Follow manufacturer's instructions to cover two 1-inch-diameter buttons with Fabric B. Or click here for Finishing Details to make covered buttons. Position the buttons to correspond with the buttonholes.
