How To | Sewing | Tied bolster

tied bolster

Follow these step-by-step instructions to create a tied bolster.

MATERIALS
Bolster form
Decorator fabric (amount depends on size of the pillow)
Contrasting fabric for trim
Matching sewing thread

INSTRUCTIONS
Measure the length and circumference of the bolster form, adding 1⁄2-inch on all sides for seam allowances. Cut a rectangular piece of fabric to these measurements.

For the tied bolster ends, cut two 8-inch-wide pieces of fabric that measure the circumference of the bolster plus 1 inch.

For trim, cut two 2-inch-wide strips of contrasting fabric that measure the circumference of the bolster plus 1 inch.

Fold each trim piece in half lengthwise with wrong sides together; press. With right side of bolster fabric facing up, pin one trim piece to each end of the bolster, aligning raw edges; sew and press.

Sew one long edge of the bolster end to the bolster, right sides together, aligning raw edges, and sandwiching trim between the layers. Repeat with the other bolster end piece. Press under 3⁄4-inch along one long edge of each bolster end. Press under 3⁄4-inch more; unfold. Snip small notches along the seam allowance, taking care not to cut through the stitching lines.

With right sides together, fold the assembled piece in half, aligning pressed casing lines. Sew, leaving open the 3⁄4-inch between casing lines at each end. Turn right side out. Refold casing lines, and stitch 1⁄2-inch from folded edge.

For ties, cut two 2×24-inch strips. Fold each strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together; press. Unfold, and fold in each raw edge to the center pressed line; press.

Refold along the center line; press. Edge-stitch to enclose the raw edges, turning the short-ends in. Tie knot in each end. Repeat for remaining tie.

Thread one tie through the casing at each end of the bolster. Insert bolster form. Pull tie to enclose.
