Rather than construct a patio around two sets of built-in stairs, Mike built wide, freestanding benchlike steps that lead to the kitchen and dining room. To control costs, he cut the stringers (the sides that hold up the steps) from treated pine and used red cedar for the treads. Once the stairs were completed, he covered the exposed pine sides with cedar he cut from inexpensive fence pickets, which he also used for the risers.
