Don't Toss Your Paintbrush-Clean It
Why It’s Important: Good quality paintbrushes can give you years of use if you properly care for them.

How Clean Latex Paint: Use a paint scraper or comb (shown) to remove as much excess latex paint as possible. Then swirl the brush in a bucket filled with one gallon of water and ½ cup fabric softener. Rinse. Run your fingers (or a combing tool) along the bristles to align them. Then hang the brush so it can drip-dry. Gravity will help the bristles retain their shape.

How to Clean Oil-Base Paint: To clean oil-base paint, you’ll need to use a solvent, such as mineral spirits, to loosen and remove the paint. Fill a glass jar with the mineral spirits, add the brush and a lid, and shake. You may need to empty and refill the jar at least once. Some painters like to follow the mineral spirits with warm, soapy water, but this isn’t necessary. Align the bristles and hang the brush to dry.

Check out the DIY WIKI for more info on types of paint.
