Wood screws have a smooth taper leading down from the head to the threaded part of the screw. The flat-headed variety can be driven flush with or countersunk below the wood surface (drill with countersink bit, then drive the screw).
Drywall screws are hefty fastenersthat not only secure materials to studs, but also are inexpensive. With threads that run the length of the shaft, they drive through the surface quickly and have a flat head.
Deck screws are comparable to drywall screws but have a special coating to prevent damage from weathering.
Metal screws have sharp points to cut a path through sheet metal and are threaded along the entire shaft.
Machine screws Have a heavy load? Use machine screws to secure any heavy material. They require a threaded pilot hole because of their blunt tips.
Good to Know: Gauge is the diameter of the screw shank. If a screw has a small gauge, then it should be used only with thin wood.
